Movie Poster Review
「Call Me By Your Name」(2017)
Call me by your name is a film directed by Luca Guadagnino and released in 2017. It's adapted from the novel by André Aciman of the same name in 2007. The film tells the story of Elio, 17, and Oliver, a 24-year-old graduate assistant invited by his father, who are attracted and eager to each other and fall in love with each other during a summer vacation. The precocious Elio's crazy obsession and love for Oliver is vividly reflected in the film.
The background of the entire poster of Call Me by Your Name is blue, and the name of the movie is yellow. Yellow and blue are in opposite quadrants on the color wheel, so they are complementary colors. The combination of the two colors in the entire poster can make the audience see vitality and impact. And I think the time in the movie is summer vacation, and blue also represents the sky. The sky in summer is very blue, especially in this atmospheric city in Italy. Blue is also the color of men. I think that blue occupies the entire background board may also represent a story about men. I remember when I was reading this novel, I remembered a passage from Elio that summarized the color of Oliver's swimming trunks.
"He had, it took me a while to realize, four personalities depending on what bathing suit he was wearing. Knowing which to expect gave me the illusion of a slight advantage. Red: bold, set in his ways, very grown-up, almost gruff and ill-tempered — stay away. Yellow: sprightly, buoyant, funny, not without barbs — don't give in too easily; might turn to red in no time. Green, which he seldom wore: acquiescent, eager to learn , eager to speak, sunny — why wasn't he always like this? Blue: the afternoon he stepped into my room from the balcony, the day he massaged my shoulder, or when he picked up my glass and placed it right next to me (André, 2007)."
"Sprightly, buoyant, funny, not without barbs — don't give in too easily; might turn to red in no time." This is the author's description of yellow swimming trunks. I think Elio is such an existence in their relationship. He is so young that he is reluctant to give up in the face of Oliver's dodge, and strives hard. His obsession with Oliver slowly became more and more bold, which also conformed to the characteristic of yellow "might turn to red in no time". So I think the yellow title is very useful and in order to distinguish it from other characters, the designer also used a different font from other characters. When Oliver massaged Elio's shoulder for the first time, he was wearing blue swimming trunks. Blue also represents piety and sincerity. This is also a representative of Oliver's serious expression of his love for Elio, even if Elio didn't realize it.
In addition, the two actors who played the main characters "Elio" and "Oliver" looked to the sky in the poster, and the side of Elio's shoulder was against Oliver's back. The two did not look at each other, but their posture suggested that their relationship was different. The photographer is a pose of two people through a low angle shot. Even though their expressions are a little serious, I can see from their eyes that they have some expectations for the future. I think this may represent the two people's yearning for their future relationship, but due to various reasons in reality, the two cannot be together, so they can only stay with each other for a short time. More, the designer put Timothée Chalamet's face as "Elio" in front. I think Timothée's handsome face can attract the attention of many young people.
The poster also used white text with different fonts to annotate the names of the main actors, directors, screenwriters, novel authors and some sponsor logos. I think the people who give credit to the movie are very important to the movie. In addition, at the top of the poster, a brief review of the movie by the staff of some famous newspapers is also listed. These short sentences are very attractive, they can make the audience curious and pay attention to the content of the movie. For example, from Joshua Rothkopf's "Triumphant and heartbreaking." This sentence makes some contrast with the posture of the characters in the poster. When I saw the poster, I also became curious about this sentence.
I think the visual effect highlighted by the entire poster is very good. It draws the attention of the audience through the contrast of colors and fonts, and shows the special affection between the two through a low angle.
I like this movie very much, and this movie also allowed me to redefine homosexuality. Love is love. Love has nothing to do with gender.
